Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a collaborative project by Miriam Schmalen, Matthias Mettenbörger and Peter Rudolph. We were looking for a way to combine our passions for photography, fashion and typography. We generated patterns using various characters of a font called “Tierra” and then used a projector to apply these patterns on our models. We are pretty happy with the results, thanks to everyone involved!

/// ART / ABS (book project)
We did this project in the 2. semester of our Communications Design studies at HTW Berlin. The task in layout / typography class was — to make a book.
What we made of it: This book contains the first 19 articles of the German constitution, which are also known as the basic rights. We noticed that nearly everybody has a version of our constitution at home, but nobody actually knows, what is written in there, at least when it comes to more than the first two or three articles. There might be several reasons for this, but we found that one of the most important ones is the terribly boring typography combined with very hard to read legal texts. Since we found it very important for everybody to know about their basic rights, we decided to try to make them more interesting an pleasant to read. We tried to structure the existing texts and put the focus on their actual meanings, to make them readable and understandable for everyone. We did not change the content (since it is a legal text) we only changed its apearance.
In about 4 months of hard work we finished this book of about 140 pages, containing all 19 articles of the German basic rights, each page and article structured and styled carefully by hand.
Thanks to our teacher Christian Hanke for his great input, support and motivation.
We are looking forward to your feedback! 2011 Typography, Layout, Print Design -

Ceci n’est pas un poster
This is an experimental free (and kind of self-ironic) project called »Ceci n’est pas un poster« (this is not a poster), which, as you might have noticed, is pretty much inspired by both René Magritte’s famous painting (»ceci n’est pas une pipe«) and the common way to present posters online these days.
The original (non)poster measures 10×13,5 cm. Which is probably the main reason why it’s not a poster ;)

Futura vs Super Grotesk
This is a project from my communications design studies at HTW Berlin done in 2010. For typography class I compared two quite similar fonts: Futura by Paul Renner and Super Grotesk by Anton Drescher. As you may know, Super Grotesk is said to be some kind of a rip-off of Futura, extremely often used in the eastern part of Germany (DDR) during the German division from 1949 to 1990, while Futura was one of the most commonly used fonts of the western part (BRD). I compared the details of both fonts with help of some of the most common east–west stereotypes like cars, beverage, or swimwear.

From my Sketchbook (Series)
In this series I am collecting various scribbles and drawings from my sketchbooks which would never be published otherwise. This is an ongoing project, so I will keep updating it with new scribbles from time to time. Stay tuned :)

Arabesque Lettering
Since I really like the look and complexity of arabic calligraphy I wanted to know how far you can go with our latin alphabet. Here is the outcome of some fun experiments with handdrawn letters.
